Multi-platform game storefront and distributor Steam is also available on Mac and Windows PCs. The Valve-owned platform lists several games in its library and is one of the most popular services for downloading video games on PCs. Steam has now announced its decision to end support for older versions of macOS as of February 15, 2024.

Apple PCs are not popular for gaming but users can still run several titles including the ones available on Steam. Until now, the platform kept support for older macOS versions (like macOS Mojave and High Sierra) to keep 32-bit games running on older Macs. However, that support is set to end next year.

In a statement to AppleInsider, the PC gaming library platform said: “As of February 15th, 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) and 10.14 (Mojave) operating systems. After that date, existing Steam Client installations on these operating systems will no longer receive updates of any kind including security updates. Steam Support will be unable to offer users technical support for issues related to the old operating systems and Steam will be unable to guarantee continued functionality of Steam on the unsupported operating system versions.”

Apple has already ended support for these versions
Apple has already stopped supporting macOS High Sierra (in 2020) and macOS Mojave (in 2021). However, Steam continued to offer basic updates and support for its clients on these operating systems as it was the only way to play 32-bit games.

However, Steam claims that after the mentioned date, it won’t be able to ensure the functionality of games on older systems. The company also noted that very few users will be affected by this decision as 98% of users are already running macOS Catalina or later.

Users who are still running older versions of the operating systems should also update to the latest macOS available if possible as these versions are vulnerable to exploits that have been patched with newer updates. Steam will also stop updating its client for macOS High Sierra and macOS Mojave after the mentioned date.
